Jharkhand Fossil Park to ‘depict unraveled histories of the state’

A 95-acre park in the hills of Rajmahal in Sahebganj, built to preserve the Jurassic era fossils found on the site, recently opened its doors to visitors.

Built at a cost of Rs 10.79 crore, it was inaugurated by Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. “It is one of the greatest treasures we have in Jharkhand. Mandro Hill is one of the rarest places in the world with such fossil finds. I am going to visit the Park again, and stay here a day to learn more about the fossils,” he said.

According to Jharkhand Tourism, it is a one-of-a-kind place tourist attraction destined to preserve the rich history of humanity. “Honourable Chief Minister Shri Hemant Soren has inaugurated the Fossil Park and Museum, which is sure to portray the unfolding histories of the state,” the tourism department tweeted.

The hills of Rajmahal are home to plants fossils 68 to 145 million years old. Paleobotanist Birbal Sahani is believed to be the first to conduct an in-depth study of the fossils, according to PTI. Thus, the Birbal Sahni Institute of Paleobotany in Lucknow holds an impressive collection of these fossils.

Over the years, the fossils found here have attracted geologists and paleobotanists from around the world.

By plane: The nearest airport is Ranchi Airport (461 km) and Patna Airport (325 km)

By train: Sahibganj Railway Station is a major railhead in the Eastern Railway Area. The closest railway the station is Mirzachouki (25 km).

By the road: Sahibganj district is connected to Ranchi in Jharkhand by National Highway No. 33.
