Additive manufacturing (AM) and advanced materials continue to dominate the conversation about transforming industrial production. The need to inspect and assess the internal and external integrity of additive parts and composite materials has led to a parallel evolution of non-destructive testing (NDT), robotics, metrology and inspection software. For more than 20 years, industrial robots have been used to automate the use of NDTs in factories, along with sophisticated hardware and software systems supported by highly trained automation engineers. The level of complexity and the associated costs involved are factors limiting proliferation, in addition to the variety of commercial and custom software components required. This session presents a new approach to semi-manual and robotic NDT based on a next-generation integrated software workflow. The latest advances in robotics, along with position coding and 3D metrology technologies, enable this transformative progress. A flexible software architecture is revealed and a new workflow is demonstrated for aerospace composite testing and automotive resistance spot welding applications.

Meet your presenter
François Mainguy worked at R/D Tech from 1995 to 1998 as the first applied physics technician working with phased array and EMAT ultrasound technologies. He left to eventually found HARFANG Microtechniques in August 2001. He introduced the first portable phased array ultrasonic system for non-destructive evaluation in June 2002. In 2005 he sold his business to Sonatest Group (Milton Keynes, UK ), where he led the development of next-generation instruments and probes. In June 2008, he founded UNGAVA in Quebec to offer design, engineering, prototyping and OEM production to industrial customers involved in instrumentation. In 2013, he launched his third start-up called PRAGMA, specializing in the design, manufacture and sale of instruments and portable systems for non-destructive testing (NDT). Mainguy has a technical background in applied engineering physics (Cégep La Pocatière), a degree in electrical engineering from the École de Technologie Supérieure (Montreal) and a specialization in microelectronics from the School of Engineers of the Canton of Neuchâtel (Switzerland).
Scott Everling leads the creation of new measurement solutions through the integration and automation of leading Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence products. This portfolio includes coordinate measuring machine technology (CMM), laser tracking and white light solutions (WLS) that integrate with machine tools, robots and other automated environments. Everling has worked in the metrology industry for over two decades, solving precision manufacturing measurement problems in a wide variety of industries. His experience includes several years of precision research at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, as well as running a measurement and programming consulting firm focusing on automotive and aerospace powertrain applications. He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University.
